ROUTE OF EXILE FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND ADULTS

On the other side of the border, as pointed out by witnesses, exile became for many a tragedy of enormous proportions. France was not ready for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of people and reacted late, organising refugee camps which became real concentration camps on the beaches of Argelès, Saint-Cyprien and other villages of the Mediterranean coast, as well as in various places inland. In the midst of the disaster, the action of some French citizens and the international aid organisations, which took the form of initiatives such as Elne Swiss Maternity Hospital, are worthy of recognition as a counterpoint and hymn to hope.
