This work analised the cultural production carried out in the French concentrations camps by the  Spanish refugees from the Civil War. The literature and artwork the Spanish created about the concentration experience of the refugees between 1939 and 1945 show the complex process of cultural reconstruction that began immediately behind the barbwires of the camps. The main point of interest of this study is the discourse of the camps as a symbolic terrain of the national imaginary of the exile. something that creates a commemoration place in the collective memory and expresses the legitimacy and moral authority of a political community uprooted. The concentrationary space, through the artists analised (Andújar, Aub, Bartolí, Bartra, Ferrer, Herrera Petere, Kent, Ione Robinson i Remedios Varo), becomes a new battlefield, a subversive place for political confrontation and cultural renewal.  

Francie Cate-Arries is professor of Hispanic Studies at The College of Wiliam and Mary in Virginia (USA). She is author of several studies about literature in the Republican exile in 1939, the work of Manuel Vázquez Montalbán the commemorative literature about 11-M.
