The Cinémathèque Euro-régionale Institut Jean Vigo (Perpignan), MUME (La Jonquera), Rivesaltes Camp Memorial Museum, the University of Perpignan Via Domitia and Girona University began a programme in 2010 entitled: "Forced Displacement and Exile in 20th Century Europe". This programme includes three seminars and a symposium. The first seminar was held at MUME in October 2010. The second at the Rivesaltes Camp Memorial Museum in September 2011. The third, dedicated to images and representations of forced displacement and exile in 20th century Europe, will take place at the Institut Jean Vigo in Perpignan on Friday 2nd March 2012.

This seminar brings together researchers, filmmakers and visual artists to attempt to label a set of images of all kinds, such as paintings, sculptures, photographs and films, to identify an entire representation, that of exile. Research into the history of art, the testimonies of the time or of contemporary artists will provide an opportunity to characterise the originality of a discourse through unique approaches. In particular, we will explore the evolution, over time, of the representations and reinterpretations made by each era of the signs and images that tried to show what could not be shown. Moreover, we will see how creators and artists today endeavour to understand, through their work, how the past has marked the present.

On 28th February, the screening of “Liberté”, by Tony Gatlif (2010), will set the tone of the seminar, and will be followed on 1st March by the film by Claire Angelini, inspired by Rivesaltes refugee camp “La Guerre est proche” (2011).

The morning of 2nd March will be dedicated to reinterpretations by historians of contemporary works about these forced displacements and, more generally, the relationship between art and the testimonies of exile. In the afternoon, there will be analysis of the approach to artists, here and now, confronted with the memory of forced displacement and exile.

Claire Angelini (film director). From the places of memory to the memory of places
