February 5, the exile of Lluís Companys Since January 28, 1939, when the French authorities opened the border, thousands of people have fled the Francoist army, which arrived on February 10 and closed it.

On February 5, the President of the Generalitat, Lluís Companys, crossed the border; the President of the Basque Government, José Antonio de Aguirre; the President of the Republic, Manuel Azaña, and the President of the Spanish Parliament, Diego Martínez Barrio, also on this date, several intellectuals and artists left Catalonia, such as Pompeu Fabra, Pau Vila, Pere Bosch and Gimpera, Joan Oliver (Pere Quart) or Mercè Rodoreda.

Today, exile and forced population displacement are part of the daily reality almost everywhere in the world and very particularly very close to us, in the Mediterranean. People fleeing wars and conflicts in the Middle East and North and Central Africa are in the same situation as the hundreds of thousands of Spanish Republicans who crossed the border in 1939.
