Double lecture and debate on the exile of Josep Tarradellas in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the beginning of his exile in France in 1939.

One of the most important events in the whole process of repealing the Franco regime in Catalonia was the return of the exile of President Josep Tarradellas. This fact, which occurred in October 1977, involving an official Catalan self-government more than a year before the adoption of the Spanish Constitution of 1978 and assuming also implicitly recognizes the historical rights Catalan as that the line of continuity with the political institution established in 1931 is respected, as a result of the establishment of the republican regime.

Josep Tarradellas, as exiled president of the Generalitat, played a key role in this process, without which it simply would not have been possible. A process that received criticism from the same opposition to Francoism, but which, at the same time, made possible the constitution of the first and only government of national unity that has existed to date. Therefore, we are facing a controversial and controversial figure, but essential for the country.

Eighty years after the beginning of the republican exile in Catalonia and more than four decades after his return, it is time, with more historical distance and more information, to make a more serene assessment of the character, who has become a reference figure. for all Catalans.

The historians Joan Esculies and Enric Pujol, both deeply acquainted with the trajectory of Josep Tarradellas, will be the protagonists of a debate on all these issues. Joan Esculies (Manresa, 1976) is a writer, biologist, journalist and Doctor in History from the Jaume Vicens Vives University Institute of History at Pompeu Fabra University and author of the thesis: Josep Tarradellas (1899-1936). From the origins to the Civil War (Barcelona, ​​UPF, 2012). Enric Pujol (Figueres, 1960) holds a PhD in Philosophy and Letters from the UAB and is the author, among other works, of Josep Tarradellas: the return of the president: June-December 1977. Doble conferència i debat sobre l'exili de Josep Tarradellas en commemoració dels 80 anys de l'inici del seu exili a França el 1939.

Un dels esdeveniments més importants de tot el procés de derogació del franquisme a Catalunya fou el retorn de l'exili del president Josep Tarradellas. Aquest fet, ocorregut l'octubre de 1977, implicà l'oficialització de l'autogovern català més d'un any abans de l'aprovació de la constitució espanyola del 1978. I suposà també, implícitament, un reconeixement dels drets històrics catalans, ja que es respectà la línia de continuïtat amb la institució política establerta el 1931, arran de la instauració del règim republicà.

Josep Tarradellas, com a president de la Generalitat exiliat, va jugar un paper clau en aquest procés, sense el qual, senzillament, no hauria estat possible. Un procés que va rebre crítiques de la mateixa oposició al franquisme, però que, alhora,  va possibilitar la constitució del primer i únic govern d'unitat nacional que ha existit fins avui. Per tant, estem al davant d'una figura polèmica i discutida, però essencial per al país.

A vuitanta anys de l'inici de l'exili republicà a Catalunya i a més de quatre dècades del seu retorn, és el moment, amb més distanciament històric i més informació, de fer una valoració més serena del personatge, que ha esdevingut una figura referencial per a tots els catalans.

Els historiadors Joan Esculies i Enric Pujol, ambdós profunds coneixedors de la trajectòria de Josep Tarradellas, seran els protagonistes d'un debat a l'entorn de totes aquestes qüestions. Joan Esculies (Manresa, 1976) és escriptor, biòleg, periodista i Doctor en Història per l' Institut Universitari d'Història Jaume Vicens  Vives de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra i autor de la tesi: Josep Tarradellas (1899-1936). Dels orígens a la Guerra Civil (Barcelona, UPF, 2012). Enric Pujol (Figueres,  1960) és Doctor en Filosofia i Lletres per la UAB i autor, entre  d'altres obres, de Josep Tarradellas : el retorn del president : juny-desembre 1977.  Barcelona : DAU, 2016.
