Claude Lanzmann (1925-2018), French film director, writer and journalist, is one of the great cultural references in terms of knowledge of the issue of the Jewish genocide perpetrated by Nazism. Almost a year after his death, we propose to remember his figure with two acts aimed at the educational community.

On March 28 at the headquarters of the Democratic Memorial in Barcelona and on March 29 at the University of Girona, the French professor and writer, Jean-François Forges who collaborated with Claude Lanzmann and published Educar contra Auschwitz. History and Memory, will talk about the didactic proposals linked, especially, with the documentary film "Shoah".

The work of French film director, writer and journalist Claude Lanzmann (1925-2018) is one of the great cultural references to the knowledge of the issue of the Jewish genocide perpetrated by Nazism. His film production and, especially, his masterpiece “Shoah” (1985) marked a before and an after. Received as a historical and artistic event, this documentary film has had a great impact and influence in approaching events from the recent past or present marked by mass violence and murder.

Almost a year after his death, the Democratic Memorial and the Exile Memorial Museum, in collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the University of Girona, propose an approach to this monumental work with the intention of, above all, , highlight its educational potential, associated with the promotion of positive values related to respect for human rights and democratic quality. “Shoah” and other films such as “Sobibor” (2001), “A Living Who Passes” (1997), “The Karski Report (The Karski Report)”, (2010), “The Last of the Unjust” (2013), beyond their indisputable artistic value, they have become an inescapable heritage of the memory of the twentieth century.

Jean-François Forges, a secondary school history teacher in Lyon, will be in charge of leading these dialogues based on Lanzmann’s work. His collaboration with the filmmaker led him to be one of the main promoters of a short adaptation of the film "Shoah" to be screened in French high schools. This pedagogical version is accompanied by a booklet written by J.F. Forges. He is also the author of the book Educating against Auschwitz (2004) and co-author of a historical guide to the same concentration camp (2011).
