Cycle of three cultural and commemorative outings, organized by the Girona History Museum and the MUME, with journeys that emulate those forced by thousands of people in early 1939 that will take place between February and April 2019.

GIRONA- RIBESALTES- PERPINYÀ

Northern Catalonia and republican exile: exclusion and political and cultural survival

We will visit the Campo de Rivesaltes Memorial, a place where republican refugees and other European citizens who, due to their political ideas or cultural and religious identity, were considered undesirable by the Vichy Regime, were interned as of January 1941. Then, we will go to Perpignan, where we will eat and continue taking a guided tour of various parts of the city that will evoke for us the humanitarian emergency situation that Perpignan was in during the first half of 1939.

Guides by: Salomó Marquès, professor emeritus of History of Education at the UdG; Jordi Font, director of the Exile Memorial Museum; Eric Forcada, historian from Perpignan.

For more information and reservation of places visit the website of Museu d'Història de Girona.

The next outings will be:

Saturday, March 2 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

GERONA- LA JONQUERA- ARGELERS- ELNA

Beyond the border: between the weather in the concentration camps and humanitarian aid

The tour begins at the Exile Memorial Museum in La Jonquera, and we will follow the route to various areas of Algiers, such as the beach, the Spanish cemetery and the Algiers concentration camp memorial. After lunch, in this same city, we will end the trip with a visit to the Elna maternity hospital.

Guides of: Salomó Marquès, professor emeritus of history of education at the UdG; Jordi Font, director of the Exile Memorial Museum; Miquel Serrano, curator of the Museum of the Exile Memorial, Bernard Ríeu, counselor for culture and Catalan in Algiers and director of the Camp Algiers Memorial.

Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

GERONA - DARNIUS - LA VAJOL - COLL DE LLI

The end of the civil war in Catalonia: the salvation of heritage and the survival of republican institutions in exile

A visit to places linked to the last days of republican Catalonia and to the evacuation of cultural heritage and funds from the Bank of Spain

We will visit the Mas de Can Descalç, in Darnius, and we will continue the road to La Vajol, where we will head towards the canta de Mina. At the end, we will have lunch in the same city and finish with a walking route to the border post of Coll de Lli.
