"Only beauty can save us in the midst of barbarism," we read as the subtitle of the exhibition by the artist Alícia Casadesús, with whom the poet Antoni Clapés has worked.

The phrase is well known, expressed in multiple variations throughout history, especially in the 20th century, when the Shoah and the Gulag ‒ true factories of horror ‒ made those who, in one way or another, suffered from it believe that the human condition could be defeated through inhumanity.

Making a Parcel with Neatly Folded Clothes is just an attempt at artistic interpretation through the selection of 15 images by photographers who were able to understand and capture the drama of those people who experienced, with all their human, historical, social and political dimensions, the February 1939 exile and were exceptional witnesses and condemnatory voices.

The artist and the poet have endeavoured to capture some moments of ephemeral beauty ‒ such as a smile, the brush of a hand, the memory of a piece of music or a poem, a gesture of solidarity, a compassionate glance or the tenderness of 'a ray of sunshine' ‒, contrasting them with the drama of exile through small pieces that take as a reference the image in question and poems that do not seek to be complex but rather transparent and fluid.

For today’s visitors, Making a Parcel with Neatly Folded Clothes should be a call and an invitation to hope, to not give up, to stress the conviction that beauty is the place where we humans must live to avoid repeating past excesses.
