Helios Gómez (Seville, 1905-Barcelona, 1956) belongs to the inter-war generation committed to political and social causes. He was known mainly for his work in the fields of design, advertising, newspaper titles, militant posters and illustrations published in the press and compiled in several albums such as Días de Ira (Berlin, 1930), Revolución Española (USSR, 1933) and Viva Octubre (Brussels, 1936). He combined his work with an intensive political activism and was forced into exile during Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship and after the Republican defeat in 1939. From 1939 to 1942, he was sent to different concentration camps in France. Upon returning to Barcelona he was repeatedly arrested between 1945 and 1946 and incarcerated at the Modelo prison from 1948 to 1954. He died in 1956.

The Helios Gómez Cultural Association, founded in 1998 by Gabriel Gómez, the artist’s son, and the historian Caroline Mignot, endeavours to promote his life and work and to preserve his documentary and artistic legacy.
