Joaquim Vicens Gironella (Agullana, 1911 ― Toulouse, France, 1997). Son of a family of cork craftsmen and cork maker himself, from an early age he manifested civic, political and cultural concerns as well as a graphomaniac passion that he would not give up all his life. After the military coup against the Republic, he joined the Antifascist Committee and the Municipal Council of his village. Sent to the front lines, he edited the publication Victoria and wrote in other media.

Following the victory of Spanish Catholic fascism, he was forced into exile. He was arrested in Perpignan and spent more than a year in the Bram (Aude) concentration camp. Once free, he found work in a cork stoppers factory in Toulouse, where he founded a family with the republican refugee Paz Santiago Ruiz, with whom he had three daughters. Following the German occupation, he was sent to the Récébédou concentration camp and from there, with many other refugees, to Le Croisic, where he joined the Todt Organization to participate in the construction of the Atlantic Wall.

Back in Toulouse, he resumed his work and at the same time began an original work of creation from cork. His work might not have transcended without the artist Jean Dubuffet who saw his works and marveled at them, so much did they correspond to the idea of Art Brut that he was developing and that he wanted. present as an alternative current to institutional art. In 1948, he presented his work in a personal exhibition in Paris and then participated in many other events.

At present, the work of the author of Agullana has reached a remarkable level of projection, with a presence in several museums and in international exhibitions of great renown, as well as numerous references in articles, books and doctoral theses. This contrasts with the little recognition in his native country, even among specialists, although he is the most representative Catalan author of Art Brut and one of its most eminent representatives. A misinformation that this initiative aims to help overcome.

Vicens Gironella also wrote L'exil, mon village et moi (The Exile, My Village and Me, 1984), memoirs in which, with memories of his youth, personal anecdotes, moral reflections and political judgments, he evokes events and situations of a great historical significance experienced in the first person. The catalog which accompanies the exhibition will reproduce some of the most significant parts of these memories, which have remained unpublished until now.

This exhibition, curated by art historian Narcís Selles, is a co-production of MUME and the Cork Museum in Palafrugell. The exhibition will be visible in La Jonquera from April 9 to September 4, 2022 and in Palafrugell from October 15, 2022 to January 15, 2023.
