“It is a more arduous task to honour the memory of anonymous beings than that of famous persons”  W. Benjamin

MEMORIAL Retirada is a reappropriation of the photographs taken by Manuel Moros* during the Retreat of 1939. When I discovered them in 2008, I felt the need to perpetuate the memory of the Retreat. I wanted them to have an architectural and monumental dimension and to construct indestructible images, capable of resisting time and oblivion.

In a first phase, the photographs were scanned, digitally treated and finally printed. Next, they were glued to unpolished wooden planks which recall those used for the barracks in the concentration camps.

For each of the works, the alternation of cuttings from two different images refers to the often fragmentary and blurred nature of memory.

Far from simply reflecting moments related to a historical event, I sought to express the psychological dimension of the drama of the Retreat and the physical suffering to which the bodies were subjected.

*Manuel Moros: French-Colombian painter-photographer living in Collioure in the 1930s and a direct witness of the Retreat.
