The
a) The management of the memorial museum of dissemination and commemoration related to the issue of exile; moreover, managing the memorial centre created for the figure of Walter Benjamin, and other sites, places and signposts in the area surrounding the Consortium which form part of the Xarxa d’Espais de la Memòria Democràtica de Catalunya.
b) Undertaking the systematic recovery of the legacy of exile and the contemporary Catalan diaspora.
c) Reasserting the study of exile as a historical constant and as one of the most outstanding issues in the history and democratic memory of contemporary
d) Establishing points of contact with other historical and current issues such as migrations, exoduses, other forced displacements of peoples and the persecution of people due to their ideas in defence of freedom, democracy and social progress.
e) Recalling the figure of Walter Benjamin, fostering critical knowledge of his work from a historical perspective, and linking his intellectual legacy with contemporary culture and thought through the adoption of a cross-over and polyhedral view that takes into account all humanistic disciplines.
f) Acting, through the two facilities, as an invigorating body of the territorial projects on the exile caused by the Spanish Civil War, the forced displacements of people provoked by the Second World War and the prosecution of people because of their ideology, culture or ethnic origin. Moreover, special attention will be drawn to the significance of antifascist resistance in 20th century
g) Becoming a territorial space of reference in these issues within the scheme of organisation of the Memorial Sites of Catalonia, in keeping with Order IRP/91/2010, of 18th February, by which the Xarxa d'Espais de Memòria Democràtica de Catalunya was created; and encouraging the recovery, signposting and dissemination of routes, sites and remains of Republican exile and the Second World War, in relation to the aforementioned Network.
h) Establishing partnerships and maintaining relations, on the one hand, with other bodies with similar aims and, in particular, with the French and German institutions most closely linked to the 1939 Republican exile, the Nazi occupation during the Second World War, the fight against fascism, and deportation to the concentration and extermination camps. On the other, having contacts and creating paths of cooperation with archives, cultural centres, foundations, institutes, museums and university faculties which keep documentation related to Walter Benjamin or which work on issues close to the thought and work of the German philosopher.
i) Fostering the critical training of citizens, the dissemination of democratic values and the achievement of a fairer and freer world.
j) Encouraging the cultural life of the towns of La Jonquera and Portbou and placing them on the memorial map.
